What is AAA?

AAA is stand of Authentication, Authorization and Accounting. in the following we express synoptic definition of  this concepts:

Authentication refers to unique identifying information from each system user, generally in the form of a username and password. System administrators monitor and add or delete authorized users from the system.

Authorization refers to the process of adding or denying individual user access to a computer network and its resources. Users may be given different authorization levels that limit their access to the network and associated resources. Authorization determination may be based on geographical location restrictions, date or time-of-day restrictions, frequency of logins or multiple logins by single individuals or entities. Other associated types of authorization service include route assignments, IP address filtering, bandwidth traffic management and encryption.

Accounting refers to the record-keeping and tracking of user activities on a computer network. For a given time period this may include, but is not limited to, real-time accounting of time spent accessing the network, the network services employed or accessed, capacity and trend analysis, network cost allocations, billing data, login data for user authentication and authorization, and the data or data amount accessed or transferred.

One of the recent GoldNet projects is extending Mikrotik devices to support Diameter Protocol as it is necessary for the Billing/Charging of the Wifi users of a mobile operator. This software really brings an enterprise application of Mikrotik devices into all mobile operators using Diameter protocol for the billing/charging purposes.

What is Diameter Protocol?

Diameter is a next-generation industry-standard protocol used to exchange authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) information in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and IP Multimedia Systems (IMS) networks.  It was derived from and improves upon the widely deployed RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) AAA protocols, providing more reliable, secure and flexible transport mechanisms for mobile data networks. A variety of LTE and IMS network functions make use of Diameter, including the Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF), Home Subscriber Server (HSS) and Online Charging System (OCS) elements. The protocol provides a general framework for exchanging AAA messages, and specifies a standard set of AAA request and response commands and attributes.
